The Real Mother Goose

After a bit of research, it seems “Mother Goose” evolved from the 8th century nickname of Charlemagne’s mother! Known as “Goose-foot Bertha,” due to a foot malformation, she was a famed patroness of children. By the mid-17th century, “Mere l’oye”” was used in France to describe a woman who told children delightful tales. In 1729, the nursery rhymes were translated into English as “Mother Goose,” and the use continues to this day. Our Mother Goose is paired with two other classic cookie jars, Little Bo Peep and Little Ms. Muffet.
