Matilda
Brayton Laguna Pottery, yet another California company, produced this granny in the 1950s. She was hand-painted and I have seen photos of dozens of Matildas, and not one is dressed the same! How fun it must have been for the artisans to paint Matilda as they wished. I never found out why this jar is universally recognized as ‘Matilda,’ but it is. I’ve also wondered why her eyes are closed. My guess is she’s taking a cooking break, dreaming about the cake she’s about to make! Her canvas print will look lovely with other Brayton ladies.
